Money enough
We have life insurance. My husband passed away out of the blue six years ago. But he had prepared; we had his will, and he had life insurance paid up on himself. His student loan, still over 100,000 dollars owed, was dismissed when he died. Indiana is not a common property state, so any debts in his name only did not transfer to me. He had paid the last payment on our minivan a few months before, and had bought a brand new pickup truck. I returned the pickup truck to the bank. With some effort I transferred the house deed into my name, and refinanced the mortgage in my own name. I contacted all the other creditors to let them know what had happened. Discover Card promptly got rid of any obligation to pay them back, and expressed their understanding. Our bank put me in touch with a financial planner who walked me through the process of investing the bulk of the life insurance money. Consequently I have enough for the time being.
It’s temporary, and I know it’s temporary, so I’m writing and I’m homeschooling my youngest child. I have, surprisingly, a really good credit score. It feels like cheating, a bit; I pay my bills using the credit card and then pay it off in full every month, automatically, through funds transfer within my bank’s systems. It didn’t take long to set up, and I hardly think about it except to check that the funds are there to transfer. I’m being cautious in spending money. I feel really blessed.
